President Roosevelt, in a fireside address, pledges a sound currency paired with higher commodity prices. He calls for government control of gold value, a U.S. government market for gold, and a Cornering of gold to curb exports, aiming to restore price levels and stabilize purchasing power.
Partly cloudy and unsettled tonight in Ohio with Tuesday cloudiness. Slightly warmer conditions followed by a fair sky in the west portion during the afternoon or at night.
Police Chief E J Stankard announced that prosecutions will be pressed against those caught committing destructive Hallowe'en pranks after a report from Mrs Laundon of 221 Sixth Street described a tomato thrown through a rear door window. The chief said it is a crime to destroy property at any time and police will pursue offenders.
Milo Reno, president of the Farm Holiday Association, insisted the strike for guaranteed cost of production will not be halted by President Roosevelt's pledge of a regulated dollar and higher farm prices. On Oct 28, farmers picketed midwestern highways, blocking livestock shipments and clashing with deputies near James, Iowa, as trucks were turned back and produce returned to farms. Reno claimed 2,000,000 farmers in 27 states support peaceful action but warned other means could be used if necessary.
Paris October 23 Daladier and ministers faced a chamber battle over a 6 billion franc deficit plan amid protests and fears of currency instability. Government warned that speculators and gold withdrawals threaten the franc as 200 million francs left the Bank of France. Support appeared insufficient for guaranteed majority without abstentions.
Cleveland October 23 plans to thaw frozen deposits in closed banks moved forward with the appointment of a special advisory and appraisal committee for the Fourth Federal Reserve District. The panel headed by Sidney B. Congdon of National City Bank Cleveland includes A M Corcoran and F H Hobson of local banks with other members from Kentucky Ohio and Pennsylvania. The committee will work in their localities and meet as needed while NRFC officials provide full support to examine banks and prepare loan recommendations for liquidation and reorganization to the FDIC in Washington.
United Press reports seven deaths across Ohio from accidents. Victims include George Movers, Ernest Norman, and an unidentified man, all aged around 45. Corrine McIntosh, 71, died in a Cleveland house fire. Lowell Smith, 26, of New Lexington, and his wife Mae, 24, with two sons injured. Leslie Bates, 27, died in an Akron auto crash. James R. Barris, 25, died after being struck by a train in Cincinnati.
Bishop James Cannon Jr of the Methodist Episcopal Church South was granted a supreme court review of a District of Columbia indictment for violating the corrupt practices act in his 1928 election campaign. Senate probes revealed Chase National Bank lent vast sums to Cuba during 1928-29, as the Cuban economy worsened. President Roosevelt conferred with financial advisers on measures to lift commodity prices as recovery steps. Cotton futures jumped $1.25 a bale on news of price-support actions. Five bandits robbed the First National Bank at Beamers, Minnesota, taking hostages and exchanging gunfire with guard Robert Titus, who survived without being hit.
London October 23 The British cabinet decided that Sir John Simon foreign minister will not return to Geneva for the general disarmament conference session on Thursday deepening the world crisis.
Washington reports the Supreme Court will hear arguments Monday December 4 on an appeal challenging New York State Milk Control law as part of price fixing policies tied to state recovery programs. The ruling is promised soon as the high court weighs these statutory provisions.
Officers for the Lake District Newspaper Association were chosen at the annual meeting in Grafton. Sam Towers of Gberlin was elected president, replacing E. Penes of Wellington. Clyde Mohler of Berea was re-elected secretary. A dinner at Grafton M E church followed the afternoon session with guests from the North Central Ohio Employing Printers Association and talks by Karl Bull and Russell Knight on newspaper codes.
John Knechtges 58 longtime cashier and founder of Grafton Bank died after an operation at Memorial Hospital. Born in LaGrange, he moved to Grafton at four, rose from quarry worker to bank founder, served on the school board and held church and Knights of Columbus affiliations. Survived by wife Nellie, six children, three brothers and five sisters. Funeral Thursday at Immaculate Conception Church with burial in St Mary’s Cemetery.
Bessie Hawkins of Citizens Budget Company named James Dolan as the robber held on £25,000 bond. Hawkins was brought to county jail to confirm the ID by Detective Lloyd Sweet, noting she had not identified him when Dolan was earlier captured in Lorain for concealed weapons.
Willam Escake aged 16 of 379 Haron Street suffered a fracture of the right leg while playing football Saturday evening. His injury was treated and reduced at Memorial Hospital.
Lorain County potato and fruit committees meet at the agricultural extension office in conference with Kiwanis to plan next month’s county show in Elyria. They will set the date and venue and discuss cooperative staging to showcase the best county-grown potatoes and apples.
The Public Utilities Commission faces a challenge from Oberlin village officials who urge PUC authority over wholesale gas rates. The brief contends Lloyd Act validity, argues wholesale contracts between Ohio Fuel Gas and Ohio Electric Power could yield arbitrary, high costs for Oberlin residents, and seeks to join Ohio Fuel Gas as a party to the appeal.

Graf Zeppelin, the giant German dirigible, is scheduled to fly into Akron Ohio Tuesday afternoon after departing Miami at 9 p.m. It will pass over the city en route to the World’s Fair in Chicago and dock at Goodyear Airdock for supplies. Arrival time depends on the chosen northbound route with possible passes over Washington Philadelphia and New Jersey before a likely mid afternoon appearance.
