Wives of Presidents Julia Dent and the Grant Era
Julia Dent Grant, a simple middle western girl, becomes the wife of Ulysses S Grant after meeting during a Manning family wedding episode. Her calm presence and social skill helped sustain Grant through his military rise, Civil War triumph, and White House years, despite critics. The piece notes her loneliness during absences, her role in social life, and the couple's shared, evolving status from modest origins to national prominence.
