The Church of the Strangers grows within an uptown apartment building after Central Congregational Church on 37th Street was sold in 1928. Rev D A Blackburn earlier led the ministry. now Rev Paul Mansfield Spencer guides a diverse, visiting congregation with a hymn tradition tied to Phoebe and Alice Cary. The church blends Gothic entrances, a 400 seat auditorium, simple furnishings, and a baptismal font with an immersion tank. The pastor faces a guest population of strangers while maintaining a strong metropolis church presence.
