Juan Atreola, 20, pleaded guilty to multiple abuse charges after beating his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son. Prosecutors said he kicked the boy, squeezed his face, and punched him, causing brain bleeding and severe bruising. A judge derailed his excuse, ordering evaluations and setting sentencing for December 14.
In Bogota unemployed Luis Miguel Aldana, 52, has sewn his lips and hidden behind an iron mask to press the government for a loan to start a cottage textile business and to cover health care debts for his wife and children. In South Bend Indiana four officers responding to a burglary report at a vacant garbage-filled house were overwhelmed by fleas. The insects covered their bodies including socks and eyes prompting decontamination. Corporal Ken Stuart described the assault as disgusting.
Avan escorted officers back to their station where they showered with flea and rice shampoo and soap while a wife of an officer brought a change of clothing. Sgt. Chuck Stokes said the officers were furious and the flea incident wrecked the rest of the shift.
