Sniper Message Leaves Officers Scrambling After Briefing

The article describes a threatening note left at a steakhouse linked to the Washington area sniper case. Moose refused to elaborate before saying media should report it clearly and often. Joyce Utter of Montgomery County Police says the statement should make sense to the writer, the only person Moose wants to talk to. A law enforcement source suggests the note may be from the sniper. Investigators completed a search near the restaurant with few details released. Witnesses heard a shot near the restaurant but saw no shooter. If the incidents are connected, it would mark the sniper's farthest travel from Washington, about 85 miles south. Former FBI profiler Clinton Van Zandt notes the pattern could reflect changing tactics in response to law enforcement. The most recent confirmed attack was Linda Franklin's murder in Falls Church outside a Home Depot. Ashland residents remain on edge as shoppers report fear in the vicinity of the Virginia Center Commons mall.
