Maquon State Bank was robbed of $9,000 and bonds of unknown value by four bandits who held two bank officials prisoner overnight. The robbers visited Dr. S Hartsook and Ray Simkins at his home, demanded funds, then forced employees to empty the cages before locking them in the vault and fleeing toward Peoria.
In Oberlin on October 13 Sheriff Clarence Adams raided a South Loren street dwelling, found it deserted but with a five gallon liquor can attic. Joy Mae Stevens was arrested nearby and, arraigned before Justice S. J. George, found guilty of possession of liquor and fined 100 dollars and costs.
A Lake Avenue sewing circle meets at Mrs. Albert King’s home to mend clothing and shoes for families in need. The group seeks donations of clothing, shoes, underwear, and boys’ garments and plans its next meeting at Mrs. Howard Hulse’s home on Lake avenue October 29.
Howard E. Reed of Pittsburgh and vice president of the Fidelity Association of Wheeling West Virginia will address the Elyria Kiwanis Club at the Hotel Newell this Thursday, as announced.

Elyria political candidates from both parties prepare for a two front campaign. Republicans speak at Elyria High School auditorium at 8.00 P M with most ticket holders likely to attend and present their case for election. Democrats start with an outdoor meeting in Ely Park across from the Court House at 8.00 P M led by mayoral candidate W H Van Oster and city solicitor candidate T A Conway as principal speakers.
United Press reports today on the Sino Japanese dispute in Manchuria. China submitted a secret communication to the League of Nations Council outlining the Manchurian situation while Japanese delegates were ordered to remain at Geneva as Tokyo saw progress in league efforts. Japan stressed it never contemplated war in response to notes about its anti-war pact obligations.
Washington reports the Interstate Commerce Commission proposes a pooling plan to ease rail distress without wage cuts. The move would use small, broad rate increases totaling hundreds of millions to aid railroads, with a temporary rise through March 1933 and minimal price impact on ordinary citizens.
C. A. Paul, 37, of South Bend, an Indiana Michigan Electric lineman, was shot through the neck and jaw by two highwaymen and two women accomplices two miles east of Benton Harbor, Mich. He regained consciousness and drove to a hospital. Police captured the four suspects, described as negroes, in Flint, Mich., after a radio alert.
The Chronicle-Telegram runs a weekly bird coloring contest featuring the yellow-throat. Children under thirteen with subscriber parents cut the bird from Monday issues, color it, and mail to the contest editor. Winners are announced each Monday and receive a Bird Land coloring kit with crayons, watercolors, brushes, and colored pictures. Entries must reach the office by Friday midnight.
Rotarians will hear Free Hopkins of Fostoria governor of the Twenty first District Rotary International during an official visit to the Elyria Rotary Club at the Hotel Newell next Tuesday. Hopkins, mayor and postmaster of Fostoria and a newspaper publisher, oversees northern Ohio with 72 clubs and plans to visit every club in the district. Two former governors, Lawrence H. Webber and Samuel H. Squire, will join the group, with t. Clare George editor of The Chronicle Telegram speaking yesterday.
Akron will depart for Lakehurst New Jersey to take up residence at the naval station weather permitting The move follows Navy approval for inspection and survey and confirms construction will continue on the sister ship ZRS 5 The plan promises steady work for about 15 months at the Goodyear Zeppelin airdock with the Akron and ZRS 5 programs underway
John B. Wilkins of Alliance was elected governor of the Ohio District Kiwanis Clubs at the convention in Columbus. Forrest F. Smith of Columbus was chosen Lieutenant Governor of the Fifth District. The complete list of district lieutenant governors was announced and the convention closed at noon.
Michael Grady head of the Pennsylvania Railroad shops at Canton will address the Elyria Foremen's Club at the Y M C A on Thursday evening October 29 inaugurating the 1931 32 season. It will be his second Elyria appearance as a speaker with an entertainment program being prepared by the club's entertainment committee.
Elyria plans sewer work to offset depleted road funds and avert job losses. About 200 men may gain work restoring sewer lines on East and West avenues and 12th Street, funded from an unused balance of the 1927 $900,000 sewer bonds.
SANDUSKY, O., Oct 21. After a one day drive Sandusky was over the top today in her campaign for a 45661 community fund. Of 376 cities in the United States that started their campaign yesterday Sandusky is believed to have been the first to fill its quota.
A hearing on assessments and damages for the Hawley ditch improvement in Black River township is set in the county commissioners office for November 17, following a request by the commissioners yesterday.
Thousands filed past the casket of Samuel Mather at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Cleveland to pay last respects to the city's "first citizen." Messages of condolence arrived from President Hoover and John D. Rockefeller. Hoover called Mather a substantial philanthropist and civic leader who aided education, art, and public welfare while mobilization for unemployment benefited from his leadership. The funeral, planned for 2:40 p.m., will be private due to cathedral size, with public viewing from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
John Y T Talliday 92 of Chippewa Lake died after an accidental fall at his cottage. Coroner Crum ruled the Civil War veteran and recluse died from head injuries suffered when he stumbled over a pile of wood and lay undiscovered for about two days. Authorities dispelled earlier murder and robbery rumors, noting the deceased had little money.
Sandusky Ohio Oct 21 stage of water in Sandusky Bay sits two to three feet below normal. Capt T W Rea of East Battery Park reports the unusually low water leaving many winter-quarters boats resting on the bay bottom.
Marietta Ohio October 21 A letter found in Marietta College archives shows young Thomas A Edison describing himself as poor and needy yet focused on electrical problems and business. He writes to Friend Griffin on June 6 1893 asking to buy two F fifty H-H motors one F 20 H-H motor and one F 6 H-H motor at shop cost plus ten percent profit.
The Champion Coated Paper Company of Hamilton will install a new paper machine and building at its Canton North Carolina plant for 1 780 000 dollars. Alexander Thomson president announced the addition will be completed within eight months and add 150 to 200 jobs while the Canton plant now employs about 2 500 men.
Robbers broke into a west end filling station on October 21 and stole a safe containing about 75 dollars. It follows four prior safes taken from three stations owned by the same company this year. A separate billiard saloon here was damaged by the theft of a large 9600 dollar safe.
