Berlin prepares for the presidential inauguration on Monday with notable participants and a large parade expected. Officials report strong public interest, prizes for entrants, and organized judging by Boy Scouts and other groups.
At the Newell meeting last night 55 new members were added to the Board of Trade. Robert Rice chaired the drive with E. J. Fellow as secretary noting twenty workers involved and praising participants for the intensive campaign. The organization aims to surpass 243 members as the campaign concludes and the final count is prepared.
State inspector Q O E Rankin and Lorain police raided homes last night uncovering three stills including a 25 gallon unit at Clemente Martino’s 123 East 19th Street. More than 1,000 gallons of wine and liquor were destroyed, with martino and Dominick facing charges and hearings set for October 26.
Tommie O Niel pleaded guilty to carrying concealed weapons and received ninety days in the Toledo workhouse. Joe Jobbagy was sentenced to six months in the workhouse on a non support charge. Both are Elyria residents.
Senator Fess of Ohio reports President Coolidge objects to a 1928 renomination draft. He says Coolidge told him the president would not be a one man candidate and prefers no discussion of another term. Fess notes the president resents public urging for his re election and the middle man role.
Dieudonne Costes and Joseph Lebria of France landed in Buenos Aires at 2 54 p m after crossing from Pelotas Brazil. They completed an Atlantic flight segment in a bold air expedition.
Elyria High School hosted the second day of the Chronicle Telegram Cooking School with entertainment by Paul Wainwright and Veda Haylor. Biochemist N D Nielsen spoke on auto intoxication, while Mrs Mary Brown-Lewers urged budgeting and tracking expenses. Joseph Kiss of Savings Deposit Bank discussed savings and family finances. The day centered on a family luncheon, with Brown-Lewers proposing a budget friendly plate luncheon and showing simple, affordable dishes like Ham in Aspic and Corn Muffins.
The resolutions committee met and voted to submit eleven proposals to the Ohio W C T U convention. Items urge stronger anti liquor slogans, support for dry candidates, education and youth training, enforcement of obscenity laws, highway projects to curb unemployment, prevention of criminal insanity, peace education, a protest against boxing, and thanks to the local W C T U. Members listed: Anna Mendenhall, Ava McMillen, C A Craig, Nora B Pontius, Arnetta Gall West.
Washington Oct 20 Secretary of Interior Albert B Fall told assistant secretary B O Finney in 1922 not to divulge information on Teapot Dome lease negotiations Finney testified today to the Sinclair oil conspiracy jury Finney said he acted on Fall orders in replying to letters seeking details about Teapot Dome leases.
County commissioners W. BR, Richmond, George Rhodes and Chas Murray went to Columbus for a meeting with the State Highway department. They were joined by County engineer Chas Biggs, City Solicitor Don Myers, John Baird, Lorain councilman, I. L. Prater, Oberlin banker J. N. Stone, Oberlin, A. R. Branson and Wills Hines of Wellington. The delegation aims to secure a dependable road program for the coming year to improve multiple county sections.
Mrs. Katherine M. Stump sues two wealthy widows Mrs. Effie Sweeny and Mrs. Stella Riggs for $50,000 alleging they enticed her husband Royer E. Stump away with favors affection and many parties staged for him in Dayton Ohio on October 20.
Mrs Catherine Cassler received a stay of execution in the Lindstrom murder case. The stay, granted by Justice Wm V Brothers, awaits Judge Phillip Sullivan’s return to Chicago for further delay applications filed by Cassler’s attorneys.
CLEVELAND Oct 20 Hundreds of unauthorized immigrants swarm the Canadian border each month and seek refuge in northern Ohio’s industrial plants. Federal immigration official W H Flynn says two foreigners were jailed in Lorain to be held for deportation. M Sullivan and Charles Garinkla were returned from Newton Falls after seven aliens were arrested and ordered held for deportation. Flynn cites factories with large payrolls as hiding places where immigrants change names and evade detection.
Judge A H Webber directed a verdict for LD W Seward former postmaster in the National Surety Co suit alleging $1 261 85 paid to the United States government on Seward s bond The attorney for the surety said no claim of dishonesty but an error by an employee and Seward was held not responsible by the verdict</analysis>
Sheriff Ed Mathews returned from a two day duck hunting trip on the marshes near Port Clinton. He brought home twelve ducks including mallards black northern ducks and teals with most of the bag given to friends.
Mrs Ella A Boole of Brooklyn told Ohio convention delegates that the eighteenth amendment shows the will of the majority. She cited many states ratifying the amendment and Supreme Court decisions upholding it. She urged WCTU registry and party affiliation to elect dry candidates and criticized Al Smith's enforcement record.
Hallstead Pa Oct 20 engineer Ester brook and fireman were killed when Lackawanna passenger No 28 plunged in a washout three miles east of Hallstead. Express messenger John Grady and mail clerk John Cruiser were only slightly injured as the engine somersaulted and cars fell upon it.
Piqua Ohio bulletin reports 32 year old salesman A Grece of Sidney burned to death when his car struck a telephone pole on a sharp turn after leaving a corn festival in St Paris. An order book in the car identified the owner. he is survived by his wife and a 4 year old son.
Mrs Florence D Richard of Columbus was reelected to a sixteenth straight term as president of the Ohio WCTU at the fifty fourth annual convention. Of 018 votes cast 447 supported her, 117 went to vice president Viola Romans, with remaining votes scattered. Other officers also reelected: vice president Viola Romans, corresponding secretary H D Van Kirk, recording secretary E S Loomis, assistant recording secretary Anna K Davis, treasurer Frances E Fuller, trustees Florence P Jane and Alice Taggart.
Delegates attending the W. C. T U D convention in Elyria will tour the town at 4 p.m. autos will be provided for a two point sightseeing trip. Mrs Deans Burns chairs the committee with Mrs Nellie M Hill Mrs A C Myers Mrs Anna Kennedy and Mrs H W Merriman on the courtesy committee of the hostess union.
The Ohio W C T U convention rejected an amendment to limit term length to six years proposed by Mrs Carrie Flatter Renia aimed at long serving state president Florence D Richard. About 700 delegates attended with many seated or standing in the First Methodist church auditorium as True Patriot's March capped the session. A truck driver Powers of Kalama Mich was fined $50 and costs for driving an 11,000 pound overweight truck, Deputy Sheriff Cauloley reported.
An imposing array of speakers is set for the convention closing sessions. Madame Sayyah A Barakat founder of a home for orphan girls at Abeik Mt Lebanon Syria Senator L T Marshall Xenia author of the Marshall bill George Southwell Cleveland district superintendent of the Anti Saloon League and Dr E J Moore Columbus superintendent of the Ohio Anti Saloon League address the afternoon session. District Attorney A E B Bernsteen Cleveland and U S Congressman Clyde Kelly Punxsutawney Pa will address the evening session today.
Delegations from Columbus and Berlefontaise invited the next state W C T U convention to be held at their cites. The invitations were accepted but action will wait until after the convention by state officers.
Morning and afternoon sessions of the state W C T U convention at First Methodist Episcopal Church featured reports from departments including Americanization Anti Narcotics Child Welfare and Christian Citizenship. Miss Grace Leigh Scott Keenville Ind spoke on moral education and teaching children life’s story urging mothers to guide their children away from harmful cinematic depictions.
