Notable Elyria Leaders Remembered in Local History
The article honors Elijah DeWitt a longtime Elyria figure born 1800 in Vermont, a physician turned banker deacon and civic mover who helped bring the Lake Shore railroad to Elyria and directed church and bank service for 55 years. It also profiles John H Faxon Horatio Perry and Colonel Nahum Ball Gates highlighting their public service, faith, and leadership in Lorain County from the 1800s through the late 19th century. It ends with a note on Mrs Mary Jones whose body was found in a cistern near Norwalk, deemed a possible accidental fall.
