Mom’s Open Kitchen to Stay Open After Change in Ownership

Kenneth Baki became the new owner of Mom’s Open Kitchen on Broad Street in Elyria, promising 24 hour operation seven days a week. The longtime restaurant, opened by Emma Jean Mollohan in the mid 1940s and located at 346 Broad St for about 16 years, will remain open as normal while Mollohan is in ill health. Baki, former owner of Sun Photo across the street, sold that business to Cindy and Fred Ginter and transitions the restaurant after a decades long career in local work and a layoff from U S Steel Lorain Works.

Villages mull shared building codes and inspector

Grafton Wellington and LaGrange officials discuss forming a council to unify building and zoning standards and hire a full time inspector. The plan envisions an inspector serving all three communities, with current part time coverage in Grafton and LaGrange and none in Wellington. The proposal mirrors the Westshore Council of Governments in Cuyaoga County and would run separately from Lorain County Community Alliance planning efforts. Commissioner Betty Blair backs the idea as a workable, parallel approach to regional code enforcement.

Powell autographs book at Westlake stop cites ROTC support

Admiral King High School ROTC members greeted Colin Powell as he signed copies of My American Journey at Borders in Westlake. Master Chief Robe rt Tinsley credited Powell with funding for high school ROTCs in the 1980s. Powell declined to announce a presidential bid, saying he would decide in three weeks and urged voters to judge by ideas, not race. A Bedford man criticized Powell for skipping the Million Man March and for not detailing plans to bridge racial and class divides. Powell said he refused Louis Farrakhan’s invitation over antisemitic remarks.
