With three weeks left in 1979, United Way of Greater Lorain County has raised 1,006,825 dollars, 39.1 percent of a 2,575,000 goal. Campaign chairman Art Schowalter urged volunteers to sustain momentum during a midcampaign briefing at the Elyria Holiday Inn. Top fundraisers include Ford General Motors and US Steel with 473,313, plus industry, business, seasonal, community groups, public employees, and metropolitan divisions. Several local firms meet or exceed national averages for their sector, and Kenny King’s Restaurant earned 90 percent fair share giving.

Cleveland teachers strike over late contract offer
In Ohio's largest district 4500 CTU teachers walked out despite a Cleveland Board of Education claim that schools remained open staffed by administrators principals and substitutes. Union president Eugene Kolach called the offer insufficient while Superintendent John Gallagher warned attendance was down but schools stayed staffed. The walkout marks the district's second in just over a year.

Elyria Halloween Parade Planned by Kiwanis Oct 28
The 63rd annual Hallo ween Parade sponsored by the Elyria Kiwanis Club and the Commerce and Industry Association of Greater Elyria starts at 2:30 PM with costumed marchers lining up at Lake Avenue. The route runs west on West Avenue to Broad Street then east to East Avenue and Second Street, ending at Court Street. A horse drawn hay wagon from Elyria High School Key Club will carry pre schoolers. Cash prizes go to the three schools with the highest parade participation. 100 silver dollars will be awarded for unusual costumes. First aid and lost and found will be on the Square along with traffic help from Concerned CB ers. Beggar's Night is 6:30 to 8 PM on Oct 31.
