An Ohio Wesleyan University sophomore Keith Harvey Hutchisor 15 from Bedford Ohio was fatally shot after a roadside fruit stand incident on U S 23 in Delaware County. James Haines 19 of Rochester N Y remained uninjured as Leo Peters fired at the car. Hutchisor died later at Jane M Case Hospital. Dean William Zermen called both students good citizens and said they had borrowed a car since under 21 privileges prevented ownership.
The AEC fired its ninth full scale shot at Yucca Flat near Las Vegas as part of a rapid test sequence ahead of an October deadline. The subkiloton blast from a B tower was not initially visible, with tower and fireball fading into the desert. Officials signaled tests could continue beyond the deadline depending on talks with the Soviet Union.
Chiang Kai-shek invites Secretary Dulles to Formosa to seek a U.S. pledge to defend the outpost islands against Communist attack. Lorain man James Alex Loya twenty five of Lorain in fair condition at Amherst Hospital after his car left Baumhart Road north of Route 113 at 4 30 a m. The vehicle traveled along the berm and down a creek bed then rolled, struck a power pole and burned. Loya escaped before the fire suffered possible skull and rib fractures and facial abrasions. The crash was reported by a neighbor. In a separate mishap on North Ridge Road and Quarry Road yesterday afternoon Carl F. Hovgrefe twenty four Amherst and Ralph Brucker forty four Vermilion were moderately damaged. Hogrefe was cited for driving left of center.
Ashland Ohio reports William J Wells 20 Nankin pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the fatal shooting of his estranged wife Esther 17. He was sentenced to one to 20 years at the Ohio Penitentiary after prosecutors accepted the plea to a lesser charge. A lie detector test indicated the killing was not premeditated.
The B 52G strategic bomber, built by Boeing at Wichita, is described as the most powerful aircraft with eight engines and a 185 foot wing span. It carries two air launched missiles and various nuclear weapons, offering long range, in flight refueling, and the potential to strike multiple distant targets in a single mission. The move aims to deter during the SAC integration next year after testing at Eglin.
A U S Navy radar picket Constellation plunged into Placentia Sound near Argentia Newfoundland. 29 aboard with 18 rescued and at least one dead while 10 more feared dead as heavy rain and snow hampered search efforts.
