Debra Belaska age 52 runs as a nonpartisan candidate with a background in union work and storm water management. Her career includes International Union of Operating Engineers Local 18 since 1986 and extensive municipal storm water certifications and seminars. She is married to Joseph Gee with six adult children and 18 grandchildren.
Incumbent Steve Kovach, age 58, lists Rocky River High School graduate status in 1970 and automotive training hours. He cites 39 years as an automotive technician at John Lance Ford in Westlake, and a family including wife Kathy, a son, and twin daughters.
Kerry McCullough is a 51 year old Indiana Michigan educated entrepreneur. He runs Final Touch Entertainment a deejay and corporate planning firm. He is married to Karen for 30 years with three children Kristofer Kara and Kory and one grandchild Korinne. He previously served with Teamsters Local 52 and was president of the Sheffield Sheffield Lake Chamber of Commerce.
In a nonpartisan race Barbara Becker and incumbent Ronald Schmitz vie to lead South Amherst. The key issues are budgeting amid uncertain funding and maintaining village services while advancing storm sewer projects. Becker pledges resident outreach. Schmitz touts cost effective sewer initiatives and financial stability work.
Barbara Becker 71 a longtime Elyria area nurse and educator. She trained at Berlin Heights High School and Oberlin College earning a nursing degree and later worked at EMH Medical Center. Becker now serves as adjunct professor at Lorain County Community College and is a member of the Village Council with three children.
Ronald Schmitz, 68, incumbent, seeks re election to mayor. He is a Brookside High School graduate with a long record in public service including South Amherst Board of Public Affairs from 1969 to 1976, Village Council from 1976 to 2004, and mayor from 2004 to present. He is married with two children.
Voters will elect two South Amherst Council members from three candidates: incumbent Donna M. Hauck, David J. Leshinski, and Janice Szmania. Each candidate cites the village’s financial health as the top issue and proposes budgeting oversight, revenue enhancement, and careful expenditure monitoring to fund maintenance and infrastructure amid cuts in state and county funding.
Voters choose two of three candidates Lucinda Tomkiewicz Carolyn White and Kevin Watkinson for Sheffield Village Council. Watkinson and White did not respond to questions about the biggest village issues and plans to address them. Tomkiewicz, a long-time resident with no prior elected office, seeks change and brings a fresh perspective. Ivan Goodenow, 37, is listed with education from Lorain Community College Ashland University and work as a Palm Elementary School teacher.
