Mrs Francis W Graysons Dawn struggled off the beach at Copenhagen then returned minutes after a heavy gasoline load caused the craft to overheat. Pilot Wilmer Stutz and navigator Goldsborough shifted fuel from the nose to the rear to reduce lift, delaying the next attempt.
Cincinnati August 17 George Remus former millionaire liquor prosecutor charged with murder of his estranged wife pleaded insanity as an amended petition was filed to challenge House Bill No 90 and to permit medical testimony in preparation for trial. The act requires a special jury to determine insanity at trial and notice upon arraignment. Remus declared he would not plead insanity.
Community Chest chairman G B Fidley announced that Mrs A M Hannaford will head the ladies division again. Pledges start November 14 and a big dinner outlining plans is set for November 11 Armistice Day. A slogan contest will be announced soon.
Chicago October 17 Ban Johnson today ended his long career as president of the American League stepping out at a directors meeting and resigning effective at once Frank Navin of the Detroit club was named acting president and a full meeting of the league will set the date for formal acceptance of the resignation Johnson indicated he would decide his next move and health concerns were cited by directors noting Navin would serve until the league reconvenes
Final plans for the Elyria Board of Trade membership drive are formed for a single day on Wednesday October 14. A committee dinner at six PM at the Newell hotel will distribute prospect cards. Another dinner on Wednesday October 19 will report campaign outcomes chaired by Robert H. Rice.
Lorain oct 17 2500 Knights Templars and Masons paraded the downtown streets before and after the dedication of the 5000 Masonite Temple. State Grand Master Squire and deputy H Smythe of Elyria led the ceremonies with Masonic lodges from across northern Ohio in attendance.
At a Y M C A meeting Rev Markly outlines plans for a community center for Elyria’s 3000 plus colored residents. He says no local building meets religious education or social needs and notes $15 5000 in notes already signed with monthly payments. Oberlin College aid and church support bolster the effort to construct a center behind the Second Methodist church on Middle Ave.
National President Mrs Boole leads temperance ranks and will address the convention. Nellie M L Hill of Elyria holds the pivotal roles as president of the state board of trustees and Lorain county W C T U and acts as host to the gathering.
Mrs Lorence D Richard of Columbus will preside at the convey event as leader of the state organization of the W C T U The message notes her role and location with emphasis on the upcoming gathering via the state chapter proceedings.
Peter Eil, 79, living on West Bridge street, was found on Lodi street near Koplin's drug store with a fractured skull and broken collar bone. He died at Memorial hospital after being treated for his injuries, believed caused by an automobile strike during heavy traffic. Police recovered two bottles of liquor and questioned witnesses.
Col. Charles A Lindbergh arrives at the White House shortly before 1 p.m. as luncheon guest of President Coolidge. He wears a blue suit similar to the one worn on his arrival last summer aboard the U S 5 Memphis after returning from his trans Atlantic flight to Paris.
The district court of appeals in Toledo overruled Ben Rudner's appeal in the Don R. Mellett murder case. Rudner seeks freedom by arguing first degree murder or lack of culpability. court upholds life sentence in Ohio penitentiary for Rudner, former Massillon bootlegger, tied to a conspiracy with Pat McDermott and Louis Mazer in Mellett's death.
Two bandits entered the Farmers and Merchants bank in Mound City Kansas this morning. They locked officials and customers in the vault and escaped with 35000 dollars in bonds and an undetermined cash sum.
Steve Chick aged 52, formerly with the New York Central section gang, was found dead inside a shack on Eadycourt Sunday afternoon by friend John Stone. Coroner Myles Perry ruled death from natural causes likely after hours of death. Survived by nieces Dorothy Scrivens Dora Strenick Mary Strenick and nephew Nick B Strenick. Body to be moved to Taylor funeral parlors and then to Cleveland for funeral and burial.
In Indianapolis an interurban tram struck a truck carrying Masonry and wives en route to a Fort Benjamin Harrison dance. Margaret Pauley became the nineteenth fatality, the sixth Pauley family member to die. Funeral rites were arranged by the Masonic order yesterday.
Snow fell in Toledo today marking the first snow of the season. Government meteorologist Gurgy said no records were set as a larger October snowfall occurred in 1825, and most flakes melted before reaching the ground.
Charles A. Levine, the lone surviving passenger from the Columbia flight, set foot on U S soil in four months and headed to an uptown hotel before an official welcome by Mayor James Walker at city hall. He had returned from a European trip aboard the Leviathan.
Arthur Gardiner eighteen pleaded guilty before Judge Samuel L. Silbert in Cleveland on the charge of shooting to kill Patrolman Adolph Jindra on August 16. The court gave the maximum sentence of from nineteen to twenty years. Gardiner previously pleaded not guilty before Judge George P. Baer. He wept and said he stole to feed his starving brothers and sisters.
Mrs Mary Browne Lewers directs the Chronicle Telegram Free Cooking School starting tomorrow at Elyria High School auditorium. She aims to elevate homemaking from drudgery with new labor saving devices and menu ideas. Doors open 1 15 for poors and 2 15 for admission to the high school. Program begins 1 20.

Hon. Viola D Romans of Columbus serves a second term as representative for Franklin County and is vice president of the Ohio W T U. She has authored key legislation including a bill for educational and vocational training for women at Marysville and says she has never missed a state convention since joining.
Ohio over the weekend saw multiple fatal traffic crashes. In Athens county two 15 year olds Violet Crooks and Beatrice Bernard died when a car struck by a southbound train at Paros went off the rails. several others injured. At Meil Gully a 19 year old Ray Conley died after a collision with an Erie train. three others injured. Additional fatalities included Warl Nichols Franklin Hoff Warl Hurnett and Jack Marmer killed by trains or incidents near Cleveland and Delphos. injuries reported for several.
Four Supermarine Southampton Napier flying boats took off from Plymouth for Bordeaux at 9 a m on the first leg of a 25000 mile journey to the far east. The flight aims to gain experience cruising far from shore bases and is expected to take about one and a half years. Each plane carries bunks a pantry and a stove. The route includes Karachi Bombay Singapore Batavia Adelaide and Melbourne.
About 600 visitors join 800 delegates in Elyria at the fifty fourth annual Ohio W C T U convention. Delegates from 1059 towns will discuss Prohibition and liquor control as Mrs Florence D Richard, state president, notes the group now has 50 000 members after adding 6 000 newcomers in the past year.

Mrs Richard says the group knows no party and will vote for dry candidates. The W C T U backs the Marshall bill to restore justice hearing by mayors and justices. Senator L T Marshall will speak Thursday on the bill’s aims as Elyria marks fifty years since the last convention. A jubilee service accompanies the banquet celebrating Elyria’s 50th anniversary of women’s organizing.
Mrs. M. A. Davis of Delaware attends the state W C T U convention as an 87 year old delegate. Known as Mother Davis, she has worked for fifty three years and again recruited eighty seven new members this year for the temperance group.
Mrs Florence D. Richard state president of the W C T U addressed the First Methodist Sunday school and Bible class yesterday morning. She invited the public to attend the convention sessions opening Tuesday and spoke of the strong foundation for future life formed by the Sunday School.
Ohio state treasurer Bert Buckley said the workers compensation fund is in excellent shape in response to an insurance paper claim about a small active balance. He addressed L B Webster secretary of the Ohio manufacturers and referred to concerns about transfers from the teachers retirement fund.
