General Mills spent tens of millions to build a gluten free oat flour system at its Minneapolis area mill but four months into the switch to gluten free Cheerios a recall was issued for 1.8 million boxes of Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios made in Lodi California after wheat was found. The company faced customer concerns and apologized on Facebook and its Taste of General Mills blog while continuing to pursue safe guards and separation in production.
