Eighty thousand U S and Canadian autoworkers walked off the job at Chrysler Corp plants and depots after failed labor talks in a decade. Negotiations expired at midnight Tuesday, with thousands already out at three U S plants. Workers cited wage and benefit concessions as the backdrop to the strike.
About 5,000 UAW members at Chrysler plants in Twinsburg, Toledo, and Van Wert walk out after contract expiry with no agreement. Pickets form at seven Twinsburg gates while Toledo shift workers join the strike. Negotiations continue in Toronto and at Chrysler HQ as Bieber cites a wide gap on job security and subcontracts.
Parma area mother Monica Naples said her son Marine Cpl Daniel E Naples survived a helicopter crash off the USS Guadalcanal near Jacksonville North Carolina that killed 15 Marines. Four Marines were rescued including two from Ohio and listed in good condition. Naples served three years and previously guarded at Camp David before training aboard a troop ship for a mission to the Mediterranean.
Defense Minister Spadolini's Republican Party pulls out of the government in protest of Premier Craxi's response to the Achille Lauro hijacking. The move threatens a 26 month old coalition as Spadolini and Craxi met to avert collapse.
The Ohio Supreme Court weighs a Lorain County case likely testing the 1984 U S Supreme Court exclusionary rule ruling. Bernard Wilmoth, arrested in 1982 for a local chop shop, challenges evidence admissibility after a raid on River Motors in Lorain. The ruling could hinge on good faith in the warrant and whether improprieties void evidence.

A 38 year old ironworker from Amherst died after falling more than 30 feet from a beam during a road construction job near Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. Joseph R. Santucci Jr. of Amherst was pronounced dead at Southwest General Hospital. The Industrial First of Cleveland employee was on the beam as it was bolted into place when he fell onto RTA tracks. He served in the Air Force and was active in veterans and church groups. He is survived by a daughter, mother, brother, and sisters. Turn to page A-4.
