Birth of frozen-embryo eland calf thrills Cincinnati researchers

In Cincinnati, a 37-pound eland calf born at the zoo after 142 years from a frozen embryo marks a milestone in reproductive science. Betsy Dresser calls it the first successful birth of an exotic animal from a frozen embryo and notes potential for endangered species preservation and wider medical and zoo applications. The embryo was kept in liquid nitrogen and the Cincinnati Wildlife Research Federation, a joint venture of the zoo, Kings Island, and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, has refined transfer techniques for three years.
