The Federal Trade Commission filed formal complaints against six coal companies accusing conspiracies to raise coal prices for consumers. The firms were ordered to appear for a hearing on November 19, under directives from President Coolidge to probe recent fuel price hikes.
New York Oct 16 Charging that tall haired Helen Elwood Stokes wife of 73 year old millionaire turfman Wm Earl Dodge Stokes was known in New Yorks gay bohemia as Red Helen Mrs Anna Doering mother of Gladys Dale defended the aging sportsman in his bid to divorce his wife and win custody of their two children
Former congressman B F Welty of Lima stands trial in Toledo on charges of obtaining an unlawful fee from soldier Franklin R Strayer for securing adjusted government compensation. Welty testified he had no written agreement with Strayer or guardian on the amount but claimed a 1 3 share from the father William Strayer. He also said the father agreed to pay $6000 for three Washington trips. witnesses included Judge Crow Clintor Cole and F C Becker.
The Lorain city council voted to probe jail conditions after long standing concerns about overcrowding and unhealthy surroundings. City solicitor Wesley Grills warned that keeping a murderer in the jail could be life threatening if a sentence extended a year.
President Coolidge asked railroad executives in a White House conference to cut freight rates on coal and wheat to ease agriculture and fuel costs. He met with Samuel Rea, head of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and argued lower charges would aid the public without unduly harming railroads.

Governor Donahey commuted the sentences of Michael Stevens and Herschel Harpster. Stevens, from Cincinnati, had a seven to 15 year term for alleged attack on his daughter but guilt not conclusively proven. he has served under 10 months. Harpster, from Richland County, was serving 3 to 15 years for box car robbery and arrived at the penitentiary last October 15.
Five Independence Lumber Company workers are believed killed in a spreading forest fire in Michigan's upper peninsula near Big Bay. A six-man firefighting group was backfiring near a railroad camp when five were trapped, one survivor says. The lone survivor crawled to a hand car and escaped to safety at Big Bay.
Dayton Oct 16 Doctor Hiram Good former Dayton physician is wanted in the murder of John Finfrock at a farm he owns near Oran nine miles west of Sidney. Finfrock was shot after a dispute over bungalow work. two bullets struck him in the chest and a third in the brain. Mrs Good witnessed the shooting and fainted. Authorities plan an inquest today.
Chicago greeted former English premier David Lloyd George with a celebratory welcome on Oct 16. Crowds lined streets as bands, whistles, bells, and shouted greetings echoed through the city when he arrived by train, marking a spirited reception by residents.

Eighteen year old piano student Betty Short of New York recalls the Jungfrau climb where a boulder from a small avalanche struck her head, tearing scalp and hair from the left side. A rope saved her from certain plunge, and she has since returned to New York.
Rudolph Kubasak of 3177 Elyria Avenue Lorain was arrested by Prohibition Officer Frank Klady after a search uncovered seventeen gallons of whisky in a hidden cellar compartment. He pled guilty to illegal possession, a third offense, and was released on a 2300 dollar bond pending grand jury review after a prior 509 dollar fine.
Vermilion Oct. 16 Frederick C Morgan, 76, has served as organist for the Congregational church for 64 years, longer than Uncle Joshua Allen of Wakr e Mass. Also a longtime Vermilion G. A. R. band member, Morgan began organ playing at 12 and has played in nearly every Vermilion band since. He is a farmer living northwest of Vermilion.

The local American Legion post will attend the World War veteran Henry Jerry Simmerly's funeral at his Wooster street home on Wednesday afternoon. Ex servicemen are urged to wear uniforms and assemble at the Lecon coms at 1 39 p m to march in a body. Frida Lukocj of this city filed for a divorce from Zeigmung Lukocj an employee of Fox Furnace Co alleging frequent abuse abandonment and drunkenness seeking restraining order custody and alimony. Cincinnati Oct Oster Jud adj and fixed bond at 59.
Dayton dispatch to date states John Reed Porter died at 85 at a relative’s home in Dayton. Porter was the last of the famous Anderson raiders who captured a Confederate ammunition train with Gen Mitchell’s 22 men. They began near Big Shanty, Ga., ran 80 miles before capture, with some raiders executed as spies and an escape from Atlanta prison prior to a court martial.
In an early evening collision near Bram kd a motorist failed to head on and struck a car carrying Miss Loraine Juerze of Newport Kentucky. Kendall, Lambert Kendall, and others involved were hospitalized as authorities investigated. Judge Albert An led the response and scene handling.

Oct 16 in Youngstown Grace Dorsey 66 a Brier Hill resident was found murdered in her bedroom. Her son Nicholas awakened by a gunshot saw movement, raised a window and summoned help. He discovered his mother dead with two bullet wounds. police believe a burglar killed her.
John Delmasseur of Cleveland received a one year penitentiary sentence after a chase from Lorain by Pa trooper Price. He admitted a prior reformatory term for auto stealing and had strong references from employers and family. Companions Howard and Clarence Lane were sent to the reformatory.
William Mieciecki of Park View Allotment was playing on the Garford school grounds when he fell from a monkey climber. His left forearm was broken and a bar stepped on his fingers causing lacerations. He was taken to Memorial Hospital for treatment.
A sixty mile per hour gale swept the gulf coast causing maritime traffic interruptions and pier damage. The storm weakened as it moved ashore with no major losses expected for Gulf shipping though rail washouts disrupted Louisville and Nashville Railroad service between Mobile and New Orleans.
Newark city council approved a twenty five year franchise for the Columbus Newark and Zanesville Street Railway Company to operate in the city.
