Tanning linked to higher melanoma risk among women
The eight year study of 106379 Norwegian and Swedish women found those tanning more than monthly have 55 percent higher melanoma risk, with even greater rises for women in their 20s. Sunburns and earlier tanning elevate later cancer susceptibility. 187 melanoma cases occurred in the cohort.

Gene variant links large cholesterol particles to longevity
A study led by Dr Nir Barzilai finds late eighty to centenarians more likely to carry a gene variation that creates larger HDL and LDL particles. The variant, present in about 25 percent of the elderly group versus 8.6 percent of younger controls, correlates with higher HDL levels and bigger lipoprotein particles, with potential implications for aging and heart disease risk.
