Appointee aims to love offenders in Huron judgeship
Bellevue jurist Robert S. Smith was named juvenile and probate court judge by Governor Gilligan to replace the late Russell Antrim. A former Bellevue municipal judge, Smith favors probation over confinement, urging parent involvement and family responsibility while noting the court cannot replace parents. He faces election in November 1974 to serve the remainder of Antrim’s term. Judge Robert Vetter expected to swear him in soon.

Judge Tassie residency dispute stalls Elyria court hearing
James G. Tassie filed suit in Lorain County Common Pleas to halt a hearing on his candidacy for Elyria Municipal Court. The court set Monday 10 a.m. to decide if the proceedings may continue as to Tassie’s residency in Eaton Township or Olmsted Falls. A victory for Tassie would allow the election to proceed. a ruling against him would disqualify his candidacy. The protest, led by Roy A. West, claims Tassie fabricates his residency and questions due process. Secretary of State Ted Brown now weighs the outcome after Lorain County Board of Elections split 2–2 on dismissing the protest.

Ship shortage hits Cleveland cargo with 24 percent drop
Port officials blame a ship shortage for part of the 24 per cent slide in overseas cargo moving through Cleveland docks. Port executive director Richard L. Schultz said calls fell to 204 from 296 last year as heavy grain and oil traffic keeps freighters full. Trade development manager Peter M. Colarochig said he turned away nearly 46,000 tons of export cargo due to outbound freighters being fully loaded and bookings unavailable. Through Oct 1 exports totaled 470,022 net tons, down from 617,657 a year earlier, with a yearend rush hoped to lift numbers toward last year as iron ore deliveries may continue into December and January if weather allows.
