Pioneer rocket dies after 43 hours in outer space

Washington reports America’s pioneer moon rocket crashed into the south Pacific after 43 hours in space. It reached 79,212 miles altitude and sent signals until 11:46 p.m. e d t. The Air Force says it was consumed by friction after dipping to near 25,000 mph. President Eisenhower hailed the achievement and scientists pledged further space exploration toward Mars and Venus.
