Nimitz Questions Atom Bomb Role as War Weapon
Fleet Adm. Chester W. Nimitz told the House Armed Services Committee that the atom bomb is inefficient and should not be the main offensive weapon. He cited heavy enemy losses in long-range bombing and stressed continued importance of Navy and Army roles, while calling for balanced, cost-effective forces. Rear Adm. Luis De Florez urged caution in relying on the air force navy split and supported continued value of long-range bombers and special carrier aircraft. The testimony preceded further hearings with top defense leaders slated to testify next week.
