World War Day by Day 1914 Battle at Yser to Ypres

The Belgium field army links with British II Corps near Yser between Dixmude and the sea as French III Corps moves toward Armentieres to Ypres. Armies dig in along a 50 kilometer front from Messines to Notre Dame de Lorette and Vimy in a last ditch defense against the German drive to the sea. The sector becomes pivotal in the western front for three years, with towns erased and bombardment destroying transport and infrastructure. The Kaiser watches the Ypres assault from Thielt as a British plane bombs nearby.
