Wellington teen Randy Carmen dies after 20 day vigil
Randal Lee Carmen, the 17 year old from Wellington whose case drew national attention to life support ethics, died of heart failure at 2:50 AM in Elyria Memorial Hospital ICU. His parents Mary and Richard Carmen expressed relief and sorrow after a 20 day vigil begun Sept 21 following his backyard injury and emergency surgery. Hospital officials had refused removal of the respirator, citing a duty to maintain life despite prognosis. Neurosurgeons said brain wave tests were flat, indicating no hope for recovery.
