Lewis Seeks Dues Hike To Double Miner Payments
Cincinnati reports Joan L. Lewis drives a key vote at the United Mine Workers 40th convention to raise monthly dues from $2 to $4 for about 600,000 miners, aiming to boost annual union income by roughly $14 million while expanding initiation fees and welfare fund levies. Opponents balk at the top rate and loss of exonerations, while locals seek funds for welfare, safety, and grievances. Lewis argues the welfare fund adds value to membership and urges swift approval as the convention considers reports on salaries and wage scales.
