Prosthetic hand gains touch through implanted nerves
Case Western researchers at Cleveland VA Medical Center connected electrodes to three nerves in two amputees stumps. Over monthly lab sessions the prosthetic hand produced tactile feedback across 16 to 19 spots, letting users judge grip strength and texture. Phantom pain decreased for the men as brain areas restored touch perception. A related Swedish study reports a bone anchored prosthetic arm with limited sensory feedback and robust daily use.

Three win chemistry Nobel for super resolution microscopes
US researchers Eric Betzig and William Moerner and German scientist Stefan Hell share the chemistry Nobel for advancing microscopy beyond prior limits. Their work enables viewing living cells at molecular detail using controllable fluorescent probes and two key techniques demonstrated in 2000 and 2006.
