UPI reports tanks rolled through Beirut and armed infantry covered rooftops after bandits attacked a military jeep on an important supply road. The incident followed a brief hostage-like hold up and a Lebanese army recovery of the revolvers.
Taipei reports Vice President Chen Cheng says Nationalist China will not negotiate with the Communists in Rome nor with the Reds. he urges the United States to end Warsaw talks and withdraw Ambassador Beam. Chinese groups press Eisenhower to terminate talks citing Quemoy and Matsu fate and US leadership in the free world.
Tributes poured in worldwide for Eugenio Pacelli pope Pius XII who died aged 82. President Eisenhower praised his vision and timeless guidance while leaders from Britain Manila and other capitals mourned his passing and urged prayers for his soul.

Dissension over selecting new unit committee members prompts potential international union protest while local talks with the company continue.
In Columbus the United Glass and Ceramics Workers union leads about 25 000 glassworkers off the job as a noon Friday strike deadline nears. President R J Reiser says no change in the situation and urges an orderly shutdown to protect plant equipment across eight states. Negotiations with Libbey Owens Ford and Pittsburgh Plate Glass stalled over manpower and overtime terms.

About 1200 workers idled. 600 to return at Lorain with skeleton crews at Toledo and minor repair work at Buffalo and Chicago. Wage boosts of eight cents per hour this year and similar increases in 1960 plus some non economic changes.
