Weekend warriors become mainstay of Iraq war mobilizations
Iraq duty shifts National Guard and Reserve from rare reserves to main combat force. About 640 New York National Guard infantry mobilized for winter duty after training in New York. North Carolina National Guard sends 3500 troops, largest mobilized since World War II. Two Florida guardsmen and three Rhode Island MPs die in Iraq, elevating total Guard and Reserve deaths to 52. Experts warn of longer-than-expected deployments and permanently raised expectations for citizen soldiers.
