Pope John Paul II arrived in Rome to a vociferous welcome as thousands crowded St Peter's Square. The 59 year old pontiff, tired but grateful, thanked the crowd from his window after a six minute visit to St Peter's Basilica. He spoke of gratitude for the trip and noted the need for a just world, before acknowledging supporters including Italy's Prime Minister Cossiga and Rome's mayor.

Los Angeles reports analyst Dan Lundberg warns October gasoline supplies could drop up to 5 percent below demand, echoing last spring's 8.9 percent gap that spurred the crisis. He says winter shortages could be worse and urges higher stockpiles of diesel and heating oil. In a separate incident, a small commercial airliner crashed at Greater Cincinnati Airport, killing at least seven people and injuring several others.
Akron detectives say robbery was the motive in a gangland style murder of Elyria couple Lawrence E. Treadwell and Caroline McKinney Treadwell. William Greathouse, 25, of Akron, is charged with two counts of aggravated murder after fingerprints tied him to the couple’s car. The bodies were found on an exit ramp to I-76. Treadwell's in the trunk of a 1974 Cadillac and Mrs. Treadwell slumped in the front seat. A small amount of marijuana and white powder were found in the car. Greathouse was arraigned and held on $100,000 bond.
