California man rebuilds World War I Spad fighter plane
Livermore resident James Rickless spent 22 years and about 3000 hours to rebuild a wartime Spad 7 fighter from salvaged parts. Test pilot James Nissen flew the maiden 15 minute flight in light rain from Meadowlark Field, noting the plane has no brakes. The project drew on parts found across the United States and Canada, including a radiator from Lewiston Idaho and a fuselage found in Gastonia, South Carolina.
