Pope Pius XI Shows Signs Of Improvement

In Castel Gandolfo Italy the 82 year old Pope Pius XI gravely ill from a cerebral stroke and kidney ailment rallied through the night. A medical bulletin said his temperature pulse and respiration were near normal and that he had been able to take food as he improves.

Justice Burton Retiring From Supreme Court

The retirement of Supreme Court Justice Harold H. Burton at age 70, effective October 13, leaves President Eisenhower with a growing majority of his own appointees on the court. Burton, a one time Republican senator from Ohio, cited medical advice and best interests of all concerned. The retirement prompts speculation on potential successors and reshaping of the court’s balance.

Two Lost Children Found Near Batavia After Search

In Batavia Ohio two young children aged two and three were found after a search by volunteers and authorities. The kids sat frightened in the woods near the town Monday night, calling for help but unable to reach rescuers nearby.

Hurricane Janice Strikes Bahamas Leaves Deaths and Damage

Hurricane Janice battered the Bahamas with 3 mile per hour winds before moving offshore. A 15 foot dinghy sailor, about fifty, was swept away and presumed drowned in Nassau Harbor. Power lines fell, boats were wrecked, and homes and cars suffered damage as tourists and honeymooners faced disruption.
