Ford Cheering Elkins Crowd Juxtaposed With Newark Demonstrations
President Ford faced a warm welcome in Elkins West Virginia with an estimated 100 150 thousand people along a three mile parade route while Newark New Jersey hosted robust police security and anti Ford demonstrators outside the Robert Treat Hotel. Ford stood in the open hatch for portions of the parade and met crowds with Secret Service protection as he toured the Mountain State Forest Festival amid a day of contrasting receptions. A separate Lorain County murder conspiracy case against Dr George P Gotsis dragged through jury deadlock with eight to four votes and lengthy deliberations before a possible retrial or dismissal while foreman Bernabe Garcia and other jurors noted doubts about proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Centennial Spirit Sparks Elyria Debate Over Fourth Plans
Elyrians in 1876 faced partisan bickering as the Elyria Constitution and Elyria Republican clashed over who should plan the Fourth of July centennial celebration. The Lorain County Agricultural Society favored a civic fair, while opponents argued the event would become partisan. Despite tensions, area youths began preparations with a bonfire, fireworks, music, and a dawn artillery salute led by Capt. Burdick.
