Oberlin Democrat Donald J. Pease will not seek re election representing Lorain County and the 13th District after eight terms. He cites 30 years in politics as enough and seeks a normal life and more time with family as his wife cares for her ailing mother. He notes personal reasons and a desire to move on from public life.
Early Democratic contenders for the 13th District seat include Alan Zaleski with Walsh crossed out and question marks next to Elyria Mayor Michael Keys Joseph Koziura and former Lorain County Commissioner Hen Nabakowski. On the GOP side William Nielsen is running again while Neil Yingling weighs a bid and County Prosecutor Greg White will not rule it out after Pease's Thursday announcement.
Md Lilith Lelehalen reports Democrats react as Pease says he will not seek re election. Zaleski shows interest in Don's slot if district lines stay similar. Walsh notes a formal run after redraws. Pease called Walsh around 5 p.m. to break the news.

Elyria Alfreda Montecalvo shows a wedding band linked to her husband Michael Montecalvo who was released on shock probation from Mansfield Honor Farm. He served time for involuntary manslaughter after an ambulance ran a red light in Lorain killing Angela Robinson, who was pregnant. Montecalvo, 35, of Cleveland, arrived at Lorain County Jail with his family waiting. He says he needs to speak with probation officials before commenting further.
Four Elyria West High School students, all 19, were charged with attempted arson and criminal damaging after deputies found broken windows and gasoline-soaked shrubs at the building early today. They were arrested at about 12:45 a.m. and face first appearances in Elyria Municipal Court. damage was estimated at $1,000.
Lorain County commissioners Jacoby and Blair propose using more than half of a 0.5 percent sales tax to fund the criminal justice system, including a 222-bed jail addition if voters keep the tax. Budget Director Rokasy outlines that about 5.1 million would go to justice, 1.8 million to the general fund.
Elyria teen Janine Yovan says Richard G. Wadsworth appeared like a normal man and did not seem capable of arson. Yovan, 18, a 1991 Elyria High School graduate, spoke by phone from Cleveland MetroHealth Medical Center where she is recovering after the cabin fire that killed two others and left four teens burned.
