FBI Agent Accused of Selling U S Secrets for Gold

A 47 year veteran of the FBI based in Los Angeles was charged with conspiring to gather defense information for a foreign government after offering a "very detailed" view of U S intelligence activities in exchange for 50 000 in gold and 15 000 in cash. He was held without bail as two Soviet émigrés were also detained. The case prompted a damage assessment by the FBI and comments from Director William H Webster. The agent reportedly expressed financial trouble and had alleged ties to Svetlana Ogorodnikov and her husband Nikolay, with possible personal ties to the woman. The investigation continues.
