Welfare fund rebounding for United Mine Workers bosses
Washington reports the United Mine Workers welfare fund has recovered to about 100 million dollars in assets after a years long slump. The fund, run under John L Lewis, resumed welfare and pension payments last year and saw its unexpended balance nearly double in the last fiscal year. It is funded by a 30 cent a ton coal royalty and holds around 70 million in government bonds and 30 million in cash.
