Army weighs a new four wheel drive to replace the Jeep
Fort Eustis officials say the Jeep's market cost and limited cargo limit its usefulness in modern logistics. General Motors will supply 53 000 light trucks and four wheel drive Blazers to shift non combat duties away from Jeeps. A larger 1 1 ton payload four wheel drive under development will be sturdier faster and more capable, changing the army fleet over seven years.

Army knew Jeep unsafe years before
Army officials learned the Jeep was unsafe six years ago but rejected roll bars and seat belts to avoid interfering with combat. A Defense Department report cited design flaws and a short eight year life span as reasons to phase out the vehicle. Meantime the HMMWV will gradually replace Jeeps by the mid 1980s, with safety measures limited to driver selection and testing.
