Harshaw Mercury Probe Hearing Set for Tuesday
Harshaw Chemical Co officials from Elyria and Cleveland and Elyria city leaders are summoned to Chicago Tuesday at 9 am to face the Great Lakes Region Water Pollution Control Board over mercury discharges into city sewers and Black River. The probe seeks plans to cut mercury to no more than one part per billion and to establish corrective measures for catalyst-related waste. Elyria officials cite lack of local pollution controls and warn of economic impacts if the plant closes.

Brooklyn father dies stopping attacker in public incident
Rufus David Anderson a 4 year old interior decorator from Brooklyn died after rushing to help a girl being harmed by a man in his mid-20s. He was struck twice in the head and the attacker fled. Anderson leaves three daughters ages 16, 12, and 7. His mother Mrs Ruth Pinckney traveled from Rochester to mourn and care for the children. The city Good Samaritan law may not apply as the incident occurred on private property.

UN Mediator Jarring Returns to Moscow Amid Israeli-Arab Talks
UN Middle East peace mediator Gunnar V. Jarring returned to Moscow after another setback in Arab-Israeli talks. Secretary General U Thant said Jarring has done all he can and will resume work in the Soviet Union temporarily while Swedish ambassador Hans Blix would resume his post in Moscow, with a possible quick return to the UN in New York by mid October if needed.
