New al-Qaida chief identified as Abu Hazim al Sha ir takeover
U S officials identified a 29 year old Yemeni former bodyguard of Osama bin Laden as al Qaidas new chief of terror operations in the Persian Gulf. Abu Hazim al Sha ir, believed living in Saudi Arabia, becomes a top leader filling roles of captured or killed lieutenants since Sept. 11. He trained in Afghan camps in 1999 and is tied to the Riyadh bombings and embassy attacks, with several other senior figures still at large. The emergence signals a shift of al Qaida’s power center toward Saudi Arabia amid ongoing global counterterrorism efforts.
