Renowned newspaper man Roscoe Drummond dies at 81

Roscoe Drummond, longtime columnist for State of the Nation and Washington bureau chief for the Christian Science Monitor and New York Herald Tribune, died Friday at age 81. A veteran reporter since 1924, he served as Monitor bureau chief in Washington from 1940 and later led the Herald Tribune’s Washington bureau from 1953 to 1955.

Man Arrested in Con Attempt at Hill's Department Store

Elyria and North Ridgeville police arrested 50-year-old Georgia man M. C. Amie of Atlanta on charges of possession of criminal tools after a suspected con at Hill's Department Store on Cleveland Street. He allegedly claimed to assist with an insurance payout while showing an envelope of false cash. police traced his car at Ridgeview Shopping Center where play money was found. The driver and passenger were not charged.

Three Elyria officers hurt in pursuit crash near prison farm

In Elyria, three police officers were injured when two patrol cars collided during a chase of two 14 year old youths near the Grafton prison farm. Lt. James Spatharos, 30, had a back injury and was kept for observation. Harlan Riley, 33, and Michael Bigrigg, 29, had minor injuries. The youths, not seriously hurt, were later certified to Lorain County Juvenile Court and released to a grandmother.

Kiwanis installation slated Oct 6 in Grafton

Oberlin The Oberlin Registered Nurses Association announced a six month extension of its contract with Allen Memorial Hospital. The agreement runs six months with no wage or fringe benefit increases, as nurses seek to help the hospital reduce costs amid a weak economy. The union represents 0 full time and 30 part time members.

U S Steel Lorain retraining signs up 1410 workers

An official at U S Steel Corp Lorain Cuyahoga Works reports 1410 laid off workers signed up for retraining by Friday. Sign ups averaged 300 daily since Monday as the plant moves to place workers into 300 retraining jobs by seniority with health benefits and SUB pay eligible during training.
