Glider unit heroics told by Cleveland soldier fiancé
A clipping from England recounts Tech. Sgt. Edward W. Shimko and 11 other glider crew members in the Normandy invasion. After a nose release left them briefly exposed, they regrouped with rifles and ropes to bring the glider under control. The party traveled over 70 miles, faced heavy fire, and helped seal the Cotentin peninsula before Cherbourg fell. Shimko earned the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for leadership and courage.
