Exotic species threaten Great Lakes ecosystem balance
Sheffield reports the Coast Guard warns two exotic species, the zebra mussel and the ruffe, threaten the Great Lakes. Since 1985 the ruffe spread from Duluth to Whitefish Bay, and zebra mussels now cover much of Lake Erie’s western basin. Researchers warn they could alter habitats, disrupt food chains, and introduce diseases while humans spend millions cleaning intakes and structures.
