Health officials discuss dangers of lead exposure from dust and old paint, noting most U S homes built before 1940 contain leaded paint. A Lorain girl was diagnosed after routine testing, but three quarters of county children lack regular screening. Local clinics and Head Start programs largely drive testing while nationwide awareness remains low.
The text warns about lead in paint and its health risks for children and nursing mothers. It advises isolating disturbed areas, thorough cleanup, collecting chips and dust, wearing protective clothing, and using test kits cautiously. It mentions a $12 chip test and a $19.50 laboratory service, with contacts for health authorities.
Linda Moore of the Cleveland Health Department notes more children may be exposed as door to door screening found many above action levels in two Cleveland neighborhoods. Ohio lawmakers propose licensing for abatement contractors and up to 2500 tax credits, with up to 6 million in federal grants possible after licensing. Local health workers stress safe interim measures and caution homeowners about do it yourself removal. In Lorain, inspectors could not confirm lead paint in the girl’s home, investigated grandparents’ house as likely source, advised reducing hazards and limited visits until inspection.
