Sharon signals concessions as Israel trims claims to land
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon told reporters that Israel cannot hold all of the West Bank and Gaza and warned Palestinians that without moderation there may be permanent control of some land. He defended the road map while signaling unilateral steps if negotiations stall, and repeated that some outposts and settlements may remain for security reasons. Palestinian leaders criticized the remarks as vague and demanded full adherence to the road map.
