Model inmate stabbed guard and fled Mansfield

The 29 year old Wright a former Mansfield Ohio Reformatory inmate who escaped March 3 1976 by stabbing a locksmith with a screwdriver was arrested in Tarpon Springs Florida on charges tied to abducting teacher Linda Sharpe. He had been serving 5 to 30 years for rape and kidnapping of an 18 year old Cleveland woman in 1972. FBI and police are probing links to missing women in Tampa and nearby towns.

Galactic message halts Southern TV broadcast in England

In Southampton, England, thousands watched as bleeps and a voice claiming to be from Asteron interrupted Southern Television. The galactic visitor urged Earth to destroy weapons and unite or be expelled from the galaxy. Police investigated, southern TV apologized, and viewers panicked while authorities tracked the transmitter source.

Trade deficit at record high in October

The United States posted a $3.1 billion foreign trade deficit in October the largest on record. Exports reached $9.2 billion the lowest since March 1976 while imports were $12.3 billion, just under September levels and marking the fifth straight month imports exceeded $12 billion. Officials cited the East Coast and Gulf Coast longshoremen strike as a major factor.

Salt shortage grips city as bids await approval

Heavy weekend snowfall halved the city salt supply to about 250 tons from 400. Crews cleared major arteries last night with five aging salt trucks remaining in service. Bids for 3,500 tons of salt were opened next Wednesday, while spare stock covers only one more heavy snowfall.

Snow piles up as sleet slows drivers and causes crashes
