Value of Wheat 3 Affected by Soil
Ohio soft winter wheats mainly suit cake and cookie flour not bread flour unless blended with hard high protein wheats. Protein content links to soil. sandy light soils yield low protein, darker sands higher. Fertilizers and legumes modify protein. phosphate lowers, nitrogen raises. alfalfa boosts protein. Variety choice and proper tillage, fertilization, and soil conditions help balance protein for milling quality.
