Remembering Spencer Black River beat history and people
The piece reflects 20 years on the Black River beat in Spencer, recalling superintendent Tom Bangert, banker John B. Firestone, local grocers and merchants, and key events. It notes Kennedy’s visit, Firestone’s death and the town’s wealth from his trust, Firestone Park development, and Captain Paul Kari’s WWII era disappearance and homecoming. It links these memories to the town’s sesquicentennial celebrations and ongoing community impact.

Spencer History Tours to Museum after Sesquicentennial
Neysa Sticup recalls the Black River district tale from the Sesquicentennial to a Spencer Historical Society museum in Town Hall. The 1971 plane crash that killed Marjorie Rook and soon after Donald Larabee’s death near Black River High sparked the Rook Larabee Scholarship supporting local students. The district’s economy shifted from multiple shops to a single grocery, a blacksmith shop, a fire station, and limited dining, yet growth continues as a longtime part time job endures.
