Big 1950 Storm Dampens Yet Death Toll Rises

Eastern storm devastation continues as millions face shortages floods and outages. United Press tally shows 186 to 212 deaths across the U S and Canada with communications still limited in isolated zones. Snow laces Pennsylvania and Ohio as experts say the giant blow is tapering off.

Center Of Allied Line Collapses In Korea War

Amid a major Chinese counter-offensive 20 000 Reds broke the Allied center between Tokchon and Dechang. US forces rushed reserves as the 85 mile front faced major retreats and a large Chinese buildup threatened Manchuria. The 5th and 7th Marine Regiments advanced from Yodam but stalled, while MacArthur called reserves to blunt the attack and protect the flank toward the mountains.

38 Registrants To Be Examined Tuesday Morning

The Elyria area selective service registrants will undergo pre induction physicals tomorrow. They meet at 7 15 a m in the City Hall Council Chamber and travel by bus to Cleveland. The group includes 26 Elyria residents and 12 Oberlin College students transferred from other boards.

Busses Resume Trips Between Elyria and Cleveland

The first Greyhound bus departed Elyria for Cleveland in over 58 hours at 9:05 AM. A second left at 10:05 AM and a third was due at 12:45 PM. No Cleveland arrivals had reached Elyria by noon, but a Detroit-bound bus was expected about 2:30 PM. Oberlin buses were slated to depart Elyria at 1 and 3 PM.

Public Schools In Elyria To Resume Tuesday

Elyria public schools will resume regular classes tomorrow as announced by Superintendent L N Nicholas. He said some buildings may close early if too few teachers are available, and urged parents to keep sidewalks clear for safe student travel.

Stores To Be Open All Day Wednesday In Elyria

Elyria downtown shops will stay open on Wednesday afternoon after earlier Saturday closings due to heavy snow. The Merchants Division of the Elyria Chamber of Commerce announced the change following a canvass of downtown stores. Most outlets will operate until 5 30 p m on Wednesday.

Many Routes Now Open To Traffic

The State Highway Patrol reported no accidents over the weekend as traffic was light. Routes 6 2 20 58 113 18 82 10 511 76 and 57 were open but drivers should use chains and proceed with care. The Highway Department said all highways except 254 were open and work would focus on 254 to have it open tonight.

Class B Games Postponed in Lorain County Scholastic League

Lorain County superintendent of schools postponed all Class B Scholastic League games set for Tuesday due to heavy snow and closed roads.
