Holiday Cheer announces its 13th annual kick-off breakfast events from 7 to 9 30 am on December 5 at Burger King Amherst and December 6 at Burger King Elyria. A $20000 fundraising goal seeks funds to purchase needed items.
Businesses donating one hundred dollars or more will receive recognition twice daily on WOBL 1320 AM as Holiday Cheer is sponsored by Burger King and WOBL. Westlake man serves as director of the council.
Charles J. Brant retired as president and CEO of Bob White Services Inc in Brook Park. He served as past chairman of the Cuyahoga County Private Industry Council and supported many community activities and boards.
Cleveland Opera brings Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro to Playhouse Square with Jennifer Casey Cabot as the Countess and Mark Doss in the title role. Grant Youngblood is Count Almaviva, with broad comedy and translation choices shaping the viewing. The production showcases lavish costumes, strong ensemble singing, and a return to Italian libretto performance style. Upcoming: Donizetti Daughter of the Regiment February 14-16 and Gilbert and Sullivan The Mikado March 21-23.
Youngstown State University's Bliss Hall hosts Dana School of Music and the art, communication, and theater departments. The College of Fine and Performing Arts grew to 845 students, up 4.6 percent, as overall university enrollment fell 13.6 percent to 12,801. Dana's director Joseph Edwards notes the shift from years past when arts study faced stigma and doubt.
Youngstown State University data shows fall enrollment declines from 1992 to 1996 across most colleges. Fine and Performing Arts rose 4.6 percent from 808 to 845, while Arts and Sciences fell 19.3 percent from 4,042 to 3,260. Total enrollment dropped from 14,806 to 12,801, down 13.6 percent.
Troy Ayers, a 23 year old senior vocal performance major from Salem, says better teachers and a rising department reputation are making arts a more receptive career choice. He notes the program is attracting more capable instructors and talent.
