Ray Renz Jr announces Santa’s first Elyria visit this Saturday at 7 30 p m. He will greet Mayor Ault at city hall and address children on the courthouse steps. The holiday season opens with park decorations lighting and stores staying open until 9 p m.
President elect Dwight D. Eisenhower met at the Commodore Hotel with John R. Dunning of Columbia University to review the general state and future of atomic energy. He planned a Korea trip with undisclosed departure details and security precautions. Possible cabinet appointments were expected to be announced, with the three remaining posts in focus.
A Wooster jury returned a verdict for defendant Holmes Construction Co. in a Lorain County personal injury suit brought by Clarence Pias. Pias, injured May 18, 1948, at National Tube Co., claimed $75000 after an earlier $50000 award was overturned. The retrial began last Monday and the jury asked about contributory negligence during deliberations.

Washington George Meany a 58 year old former plumber was unanimously chosen new president of the American Federation of Labor He previously served as AFL secretary treasurer and was named by 12 top AFL officials to succeed William F Green who died of a heart attack Meany will serve as president through 1953 and is expected to be re elected at the September 1953 AFL convention.
Common Pleas Judges D. A. Cook and John D. Pincura were re elected for six year terms beginning in January and were sworn in yesterday. Cook took his oath from his son Dan Cook of Lorain, while Pincura was sworn by Clerk H. E. Agate after receiving commissions from Governor Frank Lausche.
Three American soldiers held by Soviet authorities for two days near Berlin were released. They said a Russian civilian asked if they would consider seeking asylum in the Russian zone during separate interviews. Identified are Pfc. Gene W. Adden of Nokomis Illinois Pfc. Clifford D. Michael of Middleport Ohio and Corp. James V. Higgs of Toone Tennessee. A German woman, Ingeborg Rickens, 22, was also released.
The Elyria City Board of Education approved selling bonds totaling three million dollars for new buildings and improvements. Bonds move forward as coupon bonds dated December 1 1952 with 20 year maximum maturity, auction to occur three weeks of ads and bids opened December 18 at noon. A special meeting December 2 will discuss a depository, with the next regular session December 8.
Sargent Giuseppe Cascio, 34, of Tucson, faces court martial on charges of attempting and conspiring to sell F 86 Sabrejet fighter secrets to the enemy in Korea. Co defendant S Sgt John P Jones of Manchester, Mass, is accused of obtaining and passing on the information. Jones was deemed insane and returned to the U S for treatment. Conviction could bring life imprisonment amid the first American conspiracy case in Korea.
Elyria Township Zoning Commission approved a plan to rezone a residential area to commercial for a proposed shopping center between New Route 57 and West River Road along North Ridge Road. The vote includes a contingency if the center is not built and sets public meeting dates for further rezoning requests and zoning changes.
Elyria YMCA to host open house on January 25 marking the start of a membership campaign during National YMCA week. Eight Canadian airmen were killed when a Lancaster bomber crashed on approach at Comox British Columbia in heavy fog. The aircraft shot the runway and plunged into a swamp after bouncing off the runway, exploding in flames at the coastal air base.
Lt. Gen. Glenn O. Barcus of the 5th Air Force said Communist efforts to restore depleted supplies are frantic after heavy fighting along the central front, including Sniper Ridge since Oct. 14. He noted UN aircraft destroyed over 1,000 Communist trucks in six days and that salvage keeps some vehicles moving.
James H. Ehrman, Henrietta school principal for five years, was named Firelands Local Schools superintendent by the school board. The appointment starts Jan 19 and runs through the current year and one more year. Ehrman, Bluffton College graduate 1939 and Kent State M.A. 1951, born Amherst 1917, served in the Air Corps and 33 months in India. He will oversee the Firelands High School project following Nov bond approval.
Short note from Claremont New Hampshire reports 5 year old Dennis Miller bruised his arm in a washing machine on Monday. He told his mother he was washing out his bathing suit to have it ready for next summer indicating an optimistic outlook on the short winter.
Arthur J. Richards longtime Lorain Ohio Fuel Gas Company manager died of a heart attack at 12 10 this morning after attending a Lorain City Council meeting and a meal with colleagues. He would have been 63 next month and was active in Masons Kiwanis and civic groups.
Elyria students in public and parochial schools have a long weekend before them with the Thanksgiving break starting tomorrow. Public schools close Wednesday at 3 00 pm, parochial elementary schools end at the regular hour, and all resume Monday morning.

American B 29s based in Korea bombed a Red supply depot east of Pyongyang and hit two bridges while Royal Fusiliers and Royal Australian Regiment units stormed an outpost along the Sami River Valley east of Yonchon. South Korean troops probed and repelled Chinese forces near Sniper Ridge.

A three day strike at American Crucible Products Co in Lorain ended as International Molders and Foundry Workers of North America members accepted a ten cent hourly wage increase plus a two cent cost of living boost. Journeymen molders will earn 193 per hour under the new contract, pending Wage Stabilization Board approval for the ten cent rise and existing approval for the cost of living adjustment. About 200 employees were affected.
