USX USW talks collapse plans hinder Pittsburgh contract talks
USX and United Steelworkers Local 1104 failed to resolve issues over outside contracting and wages. Company negotiator J Bruce Johnston said a revised package would fund higher wages, full pensions for 1,500 laid off workers, and job reductions, while promising $100 million for modernization at Edgar Thompson and Irvin Works near Pittsburgh. The dispute ends with halted work since August and no immediate resolution before spring.
