Grand jurors raised the murder charge against Frank Barath 56 of Stop 7 North Ridge Road for the shooting of his mother in law Elizabeth Phillips at their home about 2 am September 25 The jurors increased the charge from second to first degree which could carry a death sentence if he is convicted Stella Bucer 39 Jack Burnett 25 face embezzlement and larceny counts in separate incidents The Lorain school board clerk Eli Smith is charged with embezzlement of funds from outside districts totaling about 2000 The report notes Smith repaid 800 and the case stems from examinations of records by State Examiner Beth Loney details incomplete on Page 2.

Hearing on lottery charges against four alleged sweepstakes operators was postponed by U S Commissioner E P D Nicola for three weeks. Russell P. Vaughn aged 64 a former Lorain County school superintendent and Elyria High School principal died at his home 327 Denison Avenue after a illness of several years He would have been 65 next Friday Vaughn served as superintendent of Lorain County schools for nine years and earlier as principal at Elyria High School His long career included posts at Olmsted Falls Rocky River and Bucyrus schools He was born November 29 1870 in Olmsted Falls Ohio and studied at Ohio North New York and Wooster College He is survived by his wife Mrs Jessie L Vaughn and others (No. 4 continued on page 2)

Educators To Attend Vaughn Funeral in Lorain County

Five thousand students and 275 teachers in Lorain County schools will send flowers to the funeral for former county superintendent R. P. Vaughn on Sunday afternoon. Superintendent C. A. Gibbons notes the large group cannot attend as a unit, but many educators will be present, along with attendees from outside the county.
